A fun and easy build-your-own ice cream sundae bar perfect for Father’s Day celebrations, allowing everyone to customize their dessert with a variety of toppings and ice cream flavors.

Ingredients

  • Vanilla bean ice cream (classic base, recommend Häagen-Dazs)
  • Chocolate ice cream (quality brand like Ben & Jerry’s)
  • Strawberry or fruit sorbet
  • Hot fudge sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • Caramel sauce (buttery, not too sweet)
  • Crushed peanuts or chopped walnuts
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Sprinkles (rainbow or chocolate)
  • Chopped fresh strawberries
  • Banana slices
  • Crumbled cookies or brownie bites
  • Whipped cream (canned or fresh)
  • Cherries (maraschino or fresh)
  • Toffee bits or crushed pretzels
  • Optional extras: peanut butter sauce, coconut flakes, chocolate chips or mini M&Ms, honey or maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Chill the serving bowls and trays in the fridge or freezer for about 10 minutes to keep ice cream from melting quickly.
  2. About 15 minutes before guests arrive, scoop chosen ice cream flavors into bowls or a large serving dish. Keep tubs on ice in a shallow tray to maintain chill. Plan about 1/2 cup (120 ml) per person.
  3. Prepare toppings by chopping fresh fruits, crumbling cookies or brownies, and portioning nuts and sprinkles into small bowls. Warm sauces like hot fudge or caramel in microwave for 30 seconds or on stove over low heat, stirring frequently.
  4. Arrange bowls and dishes in an inviting layout on your table or countertop. Place spoons and napkins nearby. Put sauces in the center for easy access. Add optional extras like whipped cream.
  5. Invite family and friends to build their sundaes, encouraging creativity and fun.

Notes

Keep ice cream cold by chilling bowls and serving smaller batches. Warm sauces gently to avoid burning. Prep toppings in advance and store airtight. Label nut toppings for allergy safety. Use chilled trays with ice for outdoor events. Leftover toppings store up to a week refrigerated; unused scoops can be frozen individually.
