A creamy, tender green bean casserole with crispy fried onions that comes together in about 30 minutes. This kid-friendly version uses frozen green beans and a secret ingredient—soy sauce—for extra savory depth.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces frozen cut green beans, thawed
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions, divided
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Thaw frozen green beans slightly by running under cool water in a colander; pat dry.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Stir in soy sauce and black pepper.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine thawed green beans and half of the crispy fried onions. Pour soup mixture over and stir gently until evenly coated.
  4. Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  5. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  6. Remove foil and stir gently. If beans are still firm, cover and bake another 5 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle remaining crispy fried onions evenly over the top. Drizzle with melted butter if using.
  8. Bake uncovered for 5 to 7 minutes, until onions are golden brown and casserole is bubbly around edges.
  9. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best texture, don’t overcook the beans. Layer the onions twice for crunch in every bite. Let the casserole rest 5 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken. The soy sauce is a secret ingredient that adds savory depth without making the dish taste Asian.
