A quick and fuss-free microwave method to cook fresh corn on the cob, perfect for busy parents and kid-friendly meals. Ready in just 3 minutes, this recipe locks in moisture and natural sweetness without any boiling or grilling.

Ingredients

  • Fresh corn on the cob (1 or more ears, preferably with husks still on)
  • Unsalted butter, softened (optional)
  • Salt to taste (sea salt or kosher salt)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
  • Optional toppings: paprika, shredded cheese, chili powder, lime juice, shredded cheddar or parmesan, olive oil or vegan margarine (for dairy-free option), minced fresh herbs like parsley or chives, ci…

Instructions

  1. Leave the husk on the corn. Trim any silk sticking out but do not remove the husk.
  2. Place the ear(s) of corn flat on a microwave-safe plate. Arrange multiple ears so they are not stacked.
  3. Optionally, place a small microwave-safe cup of water beside the plate to add steam.
  4. Microwave on high for 3 minutes for one ear (700-1000 watts). Add 1-2 minutes per additional ear (e.g., 2 ears = 5 minutes, 3 ears = 7 minutes).
  5. Carefully remove the corn using tongs or oven mitts; the corn and husk will be hot. Let it rest for 1-2 minutes to allow steam to finish cooking.
  6. Once cool enough to handle, peel back the husk and silk. Use a soft brush or damp paper towel to remove any remaining silk.
  7. Spread softened butter over the corn and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add any optional toppings as desired.
  8. Serve immediately while hot. Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated gently in the microwave.

Notes

Keep the husk on to trap moisture and steam the corn evenly. Start with 3 minutes for one ear and add time in 30-second increments if needed. Let the corn rest after microwaving to finish cooking with steam. Use fresh corn for best sweetness and tenderness. For dairy-free, substitute butter with olive oil or vegan margarine. Avoid microwaving corn wrapped in foil as it is a fire hazard.
