A simple, affordable, and juicy homemade copycat of McDonald’s McDouble burger that captures the classic fast-food flavor without breaking the bank.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Β½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 2 soft sandwich buns (potato or regular hamburger buns), lightly toasted
  • 4 dill pickle slices
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped white onion
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting buns)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 pound (450g) ground beef with 1 teaspoon salt and Β½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Mix gently with your hands to combine, careful not to overwork the meat to keep patties tender (about 2 minutes).
  2. Divide the beef into 4 equal portions (about 4 ounces or 113g each). Shape each into a thin, round patty roughly 4 inches (10cm) in diameter. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing up during cooking.
  3. Heat your skillet over medium heat. Optional: Spread a thin layer of butter on the cut sides of the buns. Toast the buns on the skillet until golden brown (about 1-2 minutes). Remove and set aside.
  4. Increase heat to medium-high. Place the patties in the hot skillet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2 minutes on the first side until browned and a little crusty. Flip the patties carefully.
  5. Immediately place a slice of American cheese on two patties. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until cheese melts and patties are cooked through but still juicy (internal temperature around 160Β°F/71Β°C). Remove from pan.
  6. Spread Β½ tablespoon yellow mustard on the bottom bun. Place one plain patty (without cheese) first, then add two dill pickle slices and 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion on top. Next, add the cheese-topped patty, followed by 1 tablespoon ketchup. Cap with the toasted top bun.
  7. Serve immediately with your favorite fries or salad.

Notes

Do not overwork the meat to keep patties tender. Make a thumb indentation in patties to prevent puffing. Use medium-high heat for a good sear without burning. Toast buns lightly to prevent sogginess. Add cheese immediately after flipping patties for perfect melt.
